Here's a brief history of the department. The University of WaikatoThe University of Waikato was established in 1964. It is a public-funded university occupying 67 hectares in the city of Hamilton. The University is among New Zealand's fastest growing, with almost 11,000 students. Approximately one-third of the students are aged 25 years or older and more than half are women. Almost 20 per cent of the student population identify themselves as Maori. Academic and general staff number some 1300, including 39 Professors and 33 Associate Professors. lifted from http://www2.waikato.ac.nz/cer/university/. HamiltonHamilton is a city of about 110,000 people, offering features such as cafes, movies, major sporting events and cultural happenings. However, as well as the city lights, Hamiltonians enjoy a relaxed way of life, the great outdoors and a healthy environment. A major feature of Hamilton is the Waikato river on which locals and visitors alike enjoy a range of water activities and riverbank walks and relaxation. If you have a day or two to get away from it all then you couldn't choose a more central city than Hamilton. Raglan - with its rugged beauty and world-famous surf - is just 48 kms away. To the east over the Kaimai Ranges is the white sand and sunshine of the Bay of Plenty beaches, while the thermal and tourism attractions of Rotorua and Lake Taupo are just over an hour to the south. The mountains of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe - and the adventures of tramping and skiing - are further to the south. Meanwhile for anyone hankering after some big city action, Auckland is only an hour and a half away. lifted from http://www2.waikato.ac.nz/cer/university/nz.html.
