Summary of the Modules

This information is provided to assist you in selecting the coursework you will complete in COMP123 'The Computing Experience'. You should make your selection in conjunction with your Tutor. Copies of the Module materials will be available in the laboratory for your inspection.

Since students with a variety of backgrounds and prior experience will be entering this course, the available options are designed to be as flexible as possible. The Laboratory Introduction P1 module is compulsory for all students. You must also complete at least one P2. The expected combination of modules is 6 P1's and 3 P2's. We strongly recommend (unless you have reasonable prior experience) that you complete P1's in the basic productivity tool areas: wordprocessors and spreadsheets or databases. A suggested program would be:

  • P1 Laboratory Introduction
  • P1 Introduction to Word Processing
  • P1 Advanced Word Processing & Document Design
  • P2 Document Design
  • P1The Electronic Spreadsheet
  • P2 Spreadsheet P2
  • P1 Module of your choice
  • P2 Module of your choice
  • P1 Module of your choice
or
  • P1 Laboratory Introduction
  • P1 Introduction to Word Processing
  • P1 Advanced Word Processing & Document Design
  • P2 Document Design
  • P1 Introduction to Database Management Systems
  • P2 Microsoft Office Integration P2
  • P1 Module of your choice
  • P2 Module of your choice
  • P1 Module of your choice

Your choices should also reflect your degree program needs as well as any personal considerations. You will need to be able to justify your selections in consulting with your Tutor.

The available modules (correct at the time of printing) are listed in the table below. A brief description is given in the section after. Further modules may become available during the course. In some cases (due to hardware or software unavailability) some modules may become unavailable. Your Tutor will notify you of any such changes. Also check noticeboards and system messages.

Note: Some modules have more than one P1 leading to the P2. This is explained in the module descriptions. You will only be allowed to do a P2 without the matching P1 if you demonstrate suitable prior experience.

Record your choices on the form at the end of the summary in your manual. You will need to get your selection form signed by your Tutor.
