Course Outline
On this webpage we will provide additional material for the Database Course. More material is available via Moodle.

Organisation of the Course

Each student needs to attend two lectures per week, one tutorial per week, do the exercises, hand in four assignments, and implement a group project.
  1. Lectures

Lectures will be held in form of integrated courses, they are held by Annika Hinze. That means, they consist of presentations by the lecturer combined with small exercises for the students. So student interaction is encouraged and required. The lecture slides will be available online in Moodle.
  2. Tutorial

The tutorials are held by Stefan Mutter. The tutorials will concentrate on discussing the solutions for the exercises. Many exercises will have more than one solution -- the tutorial will provide a guideline and discussion forum. Students should prepare their exercise solutions for the tutorial and then discuss the different approaches. There will not be time to do the exercises during the tutorial; you need to come prepared!
  3. Exercise sheet

Every week there will be an exercise sheet handed out. The exercises are preparations for the assignments (i.e., the assignments will follow and build upon the exercise tasks). The solutions for the exercises are discussed in the tutorial. Example solutions will not be available.
  4. Assignments

Three assignments have to be handed in. The grades for the assignments will influence the final grades. Doing the exercises and attending the tutorials gives a good preparation for doing well in the assignments. Each student has to work independently on their assignments. Plagiarism (from external sources or from your pals) will lead to removal from the course.
  5. Project

Each student has work actively in a project group. Project groups consist of three students. Each group has to complete a project and hand the requested documents at given milestone dates. The project is do-able if you start early on and keep working. The project groups will have to organise themselves (e.g., meetings and workload sharing). At the end of the semester, each group will have to briefly present their project.

Assessment

The final course result will be calculated as follows: 44% Assignments + 23% Project + 33% Exam. This is equivalent to a 2:1 ratio for internal:external assessment and 2:1 for individual:group work during the semester.
