Message from the Chairperson

Computer science is the body of knowledge dealing with the theory, design, analysis, implementation, efficiency and application of processes that transform information. The fundamental question underlying all of computer science is “What can be automated?”

Computer use in industry, business, education and government is widespread, and the need for qualified professions with a computing background continues to grow.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Waikato has a strong international reputation for both its teaching and research. It offers a comprehensive range of courses in computing and is involved in a wide range of exciting and innovative research that transcend the boundary between theory and practice. The Department enjoys a high international academic profile for its work in such areas as broadband communication, data compression, digital libraries, formal methods, human-computer interaction, machine learning and software engineering.

The computing facilities in the Department are among the best in New Zealand and include hundreds of high performance work stations connected to the University network.

We have an attractive campus in a rural setting yet close to restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Nearby are surf beaches, fishing, hiking and ski resorts; and just 90 minutes away is Auckland, New Zealand’s major population centre.
