This paper follows closely from CGRD141 by allowing students to apply their learning in set projects and assignments. The emphasis is on process, creativity and developing confidence and personal expression. The paper also provides an introduction to typography.
Students who pass this paper will be able to:
- Demonstrate competence in presenting for assessment experimental design solutions which exhibit knowledge and control of scale, proportion, stability, dynamics, tone, pattern and texture.
- Use design elements and principles to communicate ideas in a creative manner.
- Use The Design Process to explore options for solving problems; use and explore elements and principles of design; research and analyse existing and historical design; develop concepts and articulate and exchange these ideas with class members; make informed decisions about criticisms and suggestions; and present works to a professional level.
- Recall typographic terminology and apply knowledge of basic typographic principles in the composition of typography.
- Identify examples and characteristics of the major typographic classifications (Oldstyle, Transitional, Modern, Egyptian and Sans Serif).
- Demonstrate an appropriate level of professional practice.

Attendance at all lab sesions is compulsory and attendance and participation will effect the professional practice component of all assessments. All assignments are compulsory. Two lab sessions per week will be dedicated to the design module of the paper and one lab session per week will be dedicated to the typography module of the paper.
Students are expected to attend all lab sessions, a total of 9 hours per week, students are also expected to spend approximately 4 hours per week outside of lab sessions working on assessments and course work.

A Moodle page is available for all CGRD142 students. On this page students will be able to access copies of course handouts and materials including assessment material, supporting pdfs, additional resources and an overview of what will be covered each week. Students are expected to check this site frequently for updates and to participate in discussions and forums provided through the Moodle page.
Assessment for this paper is based on your completion of assignments as detailed below and on your professional practice throughout the course.

A grading schedule for each assignment will be supplied along with each specific assignment brief. As stated in the BCGD Student Handbook 2014, assessments for course work will be graded by letter and mark, with a letter only being given as the final assessment for the paper as a whole. Assessment will be recorded on the following basis.

As stated in the BCGD Student Handbook 2014, extensions for course work must be approved in advance of the due date. Unless prior approval of an extension has been obtained, overdue work will be awarded a maximum grade of C, except on compassionate grounds. Late work without an extension will not be accepted after 5 working days from the designated hand in date.
Hand-in of assignments will be in person according to the instructions provided in each specific assignment brief. These requirements will also be posted on the CGRD142 Moodle page and reminders given during lab sessions. The target turn around time for the grading of assignments will be three semester weeks. Assignments that have been graded may be collected from the lecturer.
Class attendance is expected. The course notes provided are not comprehensive, additional material will be covered in class. You are responsible for all material covered in class.
This paper is only available to BCGD students. Enrolment is limited to 70 students per semester.
