This paper is thematic survey of the history of visual communication design from the development of writing to the end of Modernism.
The course traces the visual message embodied in the invention of writing, and illustrated texts, particularly the invention of the printing press and subsequent developments of typography and image through the industrial revolution to the beginning of the 20th century.
As visual communication design becomes a professional occupation, this paper then examines key theoretical developments up to the 1960s. The development and spread of styles, and the relationship of visual communication to the societies it served are considered. The emphasis of the course is on the formal & stylistic evolution of graphic design as signifiers of meaning.
At the completion of this course students should be able to:
- Identify significant periods, styles, processes & people involved in the development of visual communication, from the Renaissance to the modernist period.
- Demonstrate appropriate skills in research, analysis, writing, presentation, and discussion.
- Demonstrate an appropriate understanding of the forms, purposes and values of aspects of visual communication design history.
- Demonstrate an appropriate level of the use of art & design terminology.
Official Timetable Information
The course is timetabled for a two hour lecture and a one hour tutorial each week. To succeed in this paper you must attend both. Students should allow a further 4 - 7 hours for work in their own time. Lectures may not necessarily run the full two hours.

Lecture Text: Philip Meggs & Alston Purvis (2006) Megg’s History of Graphic Design, John Wiley & Sons, (4th edition). 3rd edition acceptable.
Tutorial Text: Ellen Lupton & Abbott Miller (1996) Design Writing Research: writing on graphic design, New York, Phaidon Press.
These are extended & complemented with visual material and readings not found in these sources.
There is no examination, all assessment is internal and will consist of Tutorial Exercises and three Assignments. Late assignments will not be accepted except by prior arrangement. The Large essay is compulsory.

These focus on learning design terminology, developing skills in analysis, and identifying the style and significance of historical visual communication design.

Advice for Doing Well
Arrive and be ready to start on time, sit where you can see, hear & concentrate. Keep all lecture notes and handout material in a ring binder or clear file and go over your notes regularly (24 hours / 2 weeks).
The lectures will not follow the texts fully & new material will be included in each lecture. Sometimes your only record of this will be in your notes; record any references to sources; write down any new vocabulary, dates or names. If you need help understanding any material take a note of it & ask at the end of the lecture. The number of images you will view can sometimes be overwhelming.
All the lecture slides are posted on Moodle soon after the lecture is given. Additional material for exercises, assignments, and tutorials will be on Moodle. You may be required to join in Moodle discussion groups with the others in the class.
