Multimedia and Roman Social History (MaRSH)

Technical aspects

Computer requirements

The project should run using any standard www browser on either a PC or Apple Mac (or other machine).

It uses only established Internet-based software standards.
More specifically, it uses HTML 4.0,
JPEG, GIF and PNG, VRML 2.0, and JavaScript.
It does not use any special server-side processing.

It is designed for, and tested on, both Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers.

It is designed for, and tested on, both PC (Win98, ME) and Apple Macintosh (OS8, OS9) computers.

Any discrepancies or other problems will be reported here.

Monitor sizes

Three versions of the site have been developed to take account of different user situations.

Large monitor.
Monitors set at 1024 x 768 (or larger) are recommended to use the 'Large screen' version as this utilises the larger space available.

Regular monitor.
Monitors set at 800 x 600 should use the 'Regular screen' version to avoid having to scroll. The content is the same as the 'Large screen' version.

No graphics. (the current option)
If network speeds are slow, and only basic information about the project is required, then this option should be selected. As the aim of the project is to exploit graphics, interactivity and 3D modelling, there is clearly a limit to how useful this part of the site can be.

VRML browsers

The 3D models require a VRML 2.0 plug-in to your browser in order to run.

There are several VRML plug-ins available. They are all free of charge and only need to be downloaded and installed once.

This product has been tested using CosmoPlayer plug-in (click on the name to go to the download site). Cosmoplayer is the only plug-in known to us that is available for both PC and Mac.

To run the VRML models you will need at least 64Mb of RAM and it is recommended that you quit all other applications before entering your browser.

Apple Macintosh users should increase the memory allocation of their browser to at least 25Mb (use 'Get Info' in the Finder).

Development software

The site's models were developed using the following software products.

Two-dimensional models

The pages are all in HTML 4.0 format with some Javascript included.

The pages were initially developed using MacroMedia Dreamweaver 3.0™ and then enhanced with hand-written Javascript code.

Three-dimensional models

The models are all in VRML 2.0 format.

The pages were initially developed using Spazz3D™ and then enhanced with hand-written VRML code.
