Social issues and Internet
Ethics
I don't subscribe to the notion that
technology is 'neutral' - we all need to think carefully and
compassionately about the artifacts we build. I am a member of IFIP Working
Group 9.2: a committee that aims to explore and promote the understanding of
social and ethical issues of information technology; and am on the British
Computer Society Ethics Committee. Some highlights are:
- IFIP document on regulating
the Internet
- One of my students, Penny Duquenoy,
was awarded her PhD in this area in Fall 2001.
- From January 2002-end of 2003 I
edited the Social Issues column of the ACM SIG CHI Bulletin (here's
the first article).
- I am
co-editing an ACM TOCHI
Special Issue on Social Issues of HCI. This issue should appear towards the end
of 2005.
Here's an idea for some community action (published in
the SIG CHI Bulletin, January 2003).
