Research

I am a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Waikato. My work is with the Machine Learning project. My PhD dissertation was on the design of similarity functions for instance-based learners.
Most of my publications are available.

Interests

My wife and daughter My wife Tracy and I have been married since January 1994. On 14 January 1999, we became the proud parents of a gorgeous baby girl called Katherine. Below are a couple of snapshots of Katie...
Scuba diving I usually only get the chance to go diving when I head up to Kaitaia to visit my parents. Most of my diving is done in Doubtless Bay, although I have also dived around Houhora, Whangaroa, Whangarei, Matai Bay, etc. I have yet to go diving at the Poor Knights Islands.
Music I listen to a reasonable variety of music (at least I imagine I do---doesn't everyone). A sample of my collection would reveal: Dire Straits, EMF, Enigma, Enya, Headless Chickens, Joe Satriani, John Lee Hooker, Kate Bush, Massive Attack, plenty of Nine Inch Nails, Paul Ubana Jones, Rage Against The Machine, REM, Seal, Sting, Straw People, Throwing Muses, U2, Yello, plus some classical too.
Motorcycles "In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame.

On a cycle the frame is gone. You're completely in contact with it all. You're in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming. That concrete whizzing by five inches below your foot is the real thing, the same stuff you walk on, it's right there, so blurred you can't focus on it, yet you can put your foot down and touch it anytime, and the whole thing, the whole experience, is never removed from immediate consciousness."

-- Robert Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

My machine is a 1988 CBR600. DoD#1334.

Aquaria My main interest is in planted aquaria, although I also dabble with killifish. Currently we have one main tank, 120x45x45cm. Fish consist of Discus, Corydorus trilineatus, Cardinal Tetra, and Siamese Algae Eaters. Plants are going pretty well. Click on the thumbnail below for a larger picture of the tank...
Carnivorous Plants I've fairly recently become interested in CP's (for some strange reason, quite a few people I know who keep killifish are also into CP's). I'm a nep-head. Look here if you are interested in finding out about kiwi cp-ers and their plants.
