Graduate Diploma (Computer Science) (GradDip (CompSc))

The Graduate Diploma (Computer Science) (GradDip(CompSc)) is a professional qualification designed for students who already have a degree in some subject other than Computer Science and who have some knowledge and experience of programming, perhaps through writing simple programs in Java, Visual Basic or C++. It will prepare you to apply computing concepts and practices effectively in your own particular field of expertise, such as the humanities, social sciences, education, physical sciences, management, or law.

Degree Regulations
The regulations which govern the awarding of the Graduate Diploma are published in the University Calendar.

This diploma consists of papers totalling 120 points, of which 80 points are at 300 level or above, and 40 points are at 100 level or above. At least 80 points must be from Computer Science papers.

Descriptions of the undergraduate papers in computer science can be found in the Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences Undergraduate Handbook and in the Calendar of the University of Waikato.

Although suitably qualified students can complete the Diploma programme within one academic year, many students prefer to spread the programme over one and a half years (starting mid-year) or two years to ensure that they are able to understand and master all the new ideas involved. We believe it is often better to spend an extra year at the start of your career obtaining an excellent qualification than rushing your work and obtaining an indifferent result - for that extra year can make a great difference to what you achieve over the course of your subsequent career.

If, following a Diploma, you wish to enter another postgraduate programme in Computer Science, you may be required to take some additional papers at the third-year level in order to prepare you adequately for 500 level graduate computer science papers.

Entry Requirements
To enrol for the GradDip(CompSc) you should have completed a Bachelors degree or an equivalent qualification and, importantly, have some knowledge and experience of programming. In exceptional circumstances you may be accepted without this latter requirement provided that you complete any further study considered necessary.

If you wish to take the GradDip(CompSc) without having reached the required standard of programming, you may be required to take first-year papers additional to the normal Diploma programme, as a condition of admission. This will extend your study to one and a half or two years.

The GradDip(CompSc) can be undertaken part-time. You will need to consult with one of the Diploma coordinators in the Department about an appropriate programme of study.

Enrolment Information
To enrol for a Diploma programme, the procedure is much the same as that outlined for the MSc programme. You will have to fill out either a re-enrolment form (for continuing Waikato students) or a combined application and enrolment form, along with a Departmental programme form. You should design your programme in consultation with one of the Diploma coordinators in the Department, before going on to have it formally approved by the Dean.
