Summary

Undergraduate and Honours Degrees
The Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences offers four main undergraduate degrees:

  1. Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (BCMS and BCMS(Hons))
  2. Bachelor of Science (BSc)
  3. Bachelor of Engineering (BE and BE(Hons))
  4. Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design (BCGD).

Graduate and Postgraduate Diplomas/Certificates
The Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences offers graduate and postgraduate diplomas in Computer Graphic Design, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics. These qualifications require at least one year of study.

The postgraduate diploma in a subject is for those who already hold an undergraduate degree with a major in the same or similar subject. The postgraduate diploma may be used as a pathway to the Master of Science degree.

Graduate certificates requiring at least one semester of study are available in the above four subjects. There is a postgraduate certificate available in the subjects of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics.

Graduate and Postgraduate Degrees
If you are aiming at a career in academic research and teaching, or high level research in industry or government, the one year postgraduate degrees

Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc(Hons))
Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design with Honours (BCGD(Hons))
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

are available. The two year Master of Science (MSc) and the three year doctoral (PhD) degrees are also offered in this Faculty.

Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (BCMS)
The four year Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (BCMS) has two majors:

  • Computer Science major (with specialisations available in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Technology, Data Mining, Games and Multimedia, Information Systems, Interaction Design, Internet Applications, Networks, and Software Development)
  • Mathematics major (with specialisations available in Economics and in Finance)

A BCMS (Hons) degree is also available.

A final choice of programme in which to complete the degree is usually made by the second year of study.

Bachelor of Science (BSc)
The three year Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree offers majors in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics. The Computer Science major can include a specialisation in one of Applied Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Technology, Data Mining, Games and Multimedia, Information Systems, Interaction Design, Internet Applications, or Software Development.

Majors in mathematics can include an Economics or a Finance specialisation. The Economics specialisation is also available for the Statistics major.

Other specialisations for the BSc are available in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Transfer between the BCMS and BSc degrees is generally straightforward.

Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design (BGCD)
Computer Graphic Design is a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas. This three-year degree, offered at the University of Waikato in partnership with the Whanganui UCOL School of Design, can lead to work in a variety of areas including:

  • Advertising and Branding
  • Computer Games
  • Computer Illustration
  • Interactive Media
  • Motion Graphics
  • Television Production
  • Web Design and Development

Bachelor of Engineering (BE and BE(Hons))
The four year Bachelor of Engineering (BE) and Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE(Hons)) have five specified programmes:

  • Chemical and Biological Engineering
  • Electronic Engineering (including options to specialise in optoelectronics or mechatronics)
  • Materials and Process Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Software Engineering

Students in the Software Engineering programme must enrol in the Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences.
