Frequently Asked Questions

Lecture Notes

First Term

We do not provide lecture notes for download from this this web site. Lecture slides will be available for copying from the course reserve of the central library. Below are some of the relevant lecture notes from previous years, which provide good but not necessarily complete coverage of this year's teaching. The textbook contains better explanations of the this year's contents in chapters 5, 6 and 7.

Second Term

Below are the slides that I am going to present in class. These are as accurate as possible at the time of publishing. However, if errors are detected, handouts may be changed without notice until shortly after each lecture.

Textbook

The material lectured in this course is based on the following book.

This book covers the course material in comprehensive form and provides a good supplement to the lecture notes. If you study COMP240 next year, you will continue to use this book. The book is held in the course reserve of the central library. Student discounts for the textbook are available in the book shops.

Tutorials and Practicals

Tutorials and laboratory sessions for this course will be scheduled during the first week of B semester. Each student will be signed up for two tutorial hours and two laboratory hours each week. After signing up, each student will also receive a Laboratory and Tutorial Manual, which contains instructions for the practicals and tutorial exercises.

Do not confuse the manual with the textbook. The manual contains the exercises to be done in the tutorial and practical sessions. It does not explain any lecture material.

The Windows computers in Computing Laboratory 2 (R G.07) are used for the practicals. Each student will have two laboratory hours allocated each week.

Manual Errata

Page 9:
The sentence stating that "the tests and practicals are essential requirements of the course" is incorrect-it does not match what is said in the course outline. Correct is that each test and practical contributes towards the internal assessment as indicated, and each student is required to achieve a minimum of 40% of all marks achievable in internal assessment. Nobody will fail this course just because they have missed a test or practical.
Page 28:
Practical 10 is due on 15th October 2004, not on 30th July as printed.
